After a slight "detour" involving a Newfie kitchen party and finding the bottom of a bottle of rum, Day 1 arrived. Thanks again to Adam and Amanda for the stay at their place in St.John's and for putting up with our gear completely overtaking their house! I know they are surprised that we actually managed to leave! ;o)
Our first day of the trip took us west and north of St.John's along the Conception Bay South Highway (Hwy 60). We were only on the Trans Canada for 10km or so which meant we meandered our way through every little town and harbour on the way! We passed so many interesting houses, churches so old and intricate it made me feel as if I was in Europe and bay after beautiful bay dotted with Crayola-colored houses, boats of all shapes, sizes and functions (even an abandoned ship in Harbour Grace!) and people enjoying the gorgeous weather.
The government of Canada's Economic Action plan meant that we had to ride about 10km in total on gravel road, which slowed us down a bit and left us eating more dust than we would have liked....too bad that plan wasn't actioned a bit sooner (I.e. Before we had to bike through the "results" of it!)
And how are the legs, you ask? Not so bad actually! We were both starting to get a bit tired about 25km outside of Carbonear, Sean commented that there were "a lot more hills than he remembered". At almost every town you drop down a big, fun hill into the town, but then that only meant you had to climb back out of the town on the other end....and we passed through a lot of towns! For the first 100km down things are pretty good though, see how we feel tomorrow....
Tonight we have the pleasure of staying with Jim and Barb, great friends of Sean's family. They filled us up with a delicious dinner and gave us the absolute luxury of a hot shower and a real bed to sleep in! Thank you!!We are really easing into this whole cycle tour thing gradually, aren't we.....
